Indigenous Football Australia pushes for direct funding out of Women’s World Cup legacy BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — The Indigenous Football Australia Council has urged FIFA to address what it calls an “egregious omission” of First Nations-led organizations in a Women’s World Cup legacy plan. Former Sydney Swans Australian rules football star Adam Goodes and John Moriarty, the first Indigenous player selected for Australia’s national soccer team, were among the signatories to a letter sent to soccer’s world governing body regarding legacy funding from the 2023 World Cup. Football Australia’s Legacy ’23 strategy aims to deliver economic, social and health benefits and multicultural inclusion following its co-hosting of the global tournament with New Zealand. But the IFA Council said while the legacy report report acknowledged First Nations contributors, it didn’t commit specific funding for programs that are led and managed by Indigenous people.“Despite ubiquitous Indigenous culture, symbolism, traditional ceremonies and installations at the World Cup and the holdin...

Mass. man who tried to hire hit man to kill his wife gets 10 years in prison, prosecutors say BOSTON (AP) — A Massachusetts man who tried to hire a hit man to kill his wife after she sought a restraining order has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. The sentence for Massimo Marenghi, 57, handed down Monday in federal court in Boston was the maximum possible under sentencing guidelines, federal prosecutors said.Marenghi’s conduct was “despicable,” acting U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy said in a statement.“Domestic violence is a truly haunting reality that is far too pervasive in our society. At its core, that is what the prosecution of Mr. Marenghi was all about,” he said. “He was looking to engage in the most extreme form of domestic violence by plotting the murder of his wife.”Authorities began investigating in January 2021 when someone went to law enforcement and reported that Marenghi had complained about the restraining order and asked for assistance in killing his wife, prosecutors said.Federal investigators directed that person to introduce Mare...

Howie Carr: $86,900 … $160,000 … $174,500 … hack jobs keep coming

Howie Carr: $86,900 … $160,000 … $174,500 … hack jobs keep coming Is there anyone left at either City Hall or the State House that has ever had a real job?I don’t mean as “director of civic engagement” or in the Office of Possibilities. I’m talking about doing something useful, producing goods or services that real people need or want?Is there anyone in the public sector anymore who was ever paid minimum wage to make sandwiches at a sub shop, or was responsible for getting shipments out in a timely fashion? Did any of the diversity coordinators or inclusion advocates or sustainability consultants ever make deliveries, drive an Uber or work the swing shift on an assembly line?Every week there’s more crazy news about the complete disconnect between local government and … work.Today it’s Henry Santana, candidate for an at-large seat on the Boston City Council. He was the “director of civic engagement,” whatever that means, for Mayor Michelle Wu. Guess what – at age 27, he’s never voted. Not once.Of course, he has an excuse. See, Henry was born in the ...

Callahan: It’s a prove-it season for the Patriots — and they know it

Callahan: It’s a prove-it season for the Patriots — and they know it Minutes after passing his summer conditioning test, one last dead sprint away from the rubble of last season, Patriots captain Matthew Slater stood behind a podium Tuesday and looked forward. He smiled.Soon, though, the line of questioning dragged Slater’s grin sideways and his focus to the past. Last year, his special teams allowed half of the kick return touchdowns in the NFL. Oh, and the punters shanked everything in sight. And the kickoff team couldn’t produce enough oft-taken-for-granted touchbacks, which were partially responsible for those return touchdowns. How did Slater plan to fix all this? He answered the question, but more to the point, offered an inadvertent state of the franchise address.“I think the time for excuses is up,” Slater said. “We’ve had enough excuses the last couple of seasons. It’s time for us to put up or shut up.”Amen.Related ArticlesNew England Patriots | Bill Belichick provides update on Patrio...

Cambodia’s Hun Sen, Asia’s longest serving leader, says he’ll step down and his son will take over PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said Wednesday he will step down in August and hand the position to his oldest son, though Asia’s longest-serving leader is expected to continue to wield significant power. The widely anticipated move comes after the autocratic Hun Sen’s Cambodian People’s Party secured a landslide victory on Sunday in elections that Western countries and rights organizations criticized as neither free nor fair, partially because the country’s main opposition was barred from competing. The rise to power of Hun Sen’s son — 45-year-old Hun Manet, who won his first seat in Parliament just days ago and is chief of the country’s army — is part of a larger generational shift: Many younger lawmakers are expected to take up ministerial positions, including Hun Sen’s youngest son and others related to other older party members. Many were educated in the West, like Hun Manet, who has a bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Military Ac...
