Romell Ward first learned to snowboard while he was in the Army, traveling to resorts around the world with a group of friends who were as diverse as the places they visited.“Every color, every creed,” he said. After moving to Colorado in 2018, Ward continued to enjoy winter sports and often went to the slopes solo. He’d connect with other – mostly white – skiers, who were largely welcoming. But a few unsavory encounters stick with him to this day.Ward recalls how people, emboldened by a few beers, would comment about the lack of people of color who ski.“The jokes start coming in. I’d get dirty looks sometimes walking through like I’m not supposed to be there. Sometimes just outright racial slurs shouted at me as people zip by the hill,” said Ward, who is African-American. “It happens a lot to us.”Ward recognized a need for safe spaces in Colorado snow sports for people of color. So he decided to create one.In 2021, Ward founded the BIPOC Mountain Collective with a mission to introdu...Police respond to reports of armed man on Metro bus in Hollywood

Peak gusts of up to 50 miles per hour are forecast, according to the National Weather Service, with widespread strong winds set to batter most of the Southland. Low humidities will accompany the high winds; Wednesday’s humidity could drop to as low as 12 percent and on Thursday, humidity could drop even lower to eight percent, NWS said. “Gusty offshore flow along with low relative humidity have the potential of bringing red flag conditions Wednesday and Thursday,” the National Weather Service said. SANTA CLARA – The 49ers (5-3) are back from their bye, they have another pass rusher in Chase Young, and they have fans still stocking our weekly mailbag with questions via social media:What’s the team’s current vibe after a three-game skid and now on this bye? (@andyz65c10)Chase Young raved about the 49ers’ culture after his first day on the job, and asked to expand on how it’s different from Washington, Young said: “Players’ spirit in the locker room. The spirit of the coaches. It’s just different. It’s that same thing at Ohio State, where you’re expected to win, and there’s this vibe like, ‘We’re going to win.’ ”Is Nick Bosa teaching Chase Young some edge-rushing tricks? The San Jose BART extension is proving to be quite costly, but, on a per-mile basis, it is a bargain compared to a proposed Caltrain extension in San Francisco. The Portal, a project to extend service from the Caltrain station at Fourth and King streets to the Salesforce Transit Center, is now expected to cost $8.25 billion for just 1.3 miles of additional service.Since funding for the project is not yet secured, this is a good time to reevaluate and, ideally, shelve this project. The project is being proposed by the Transbay Joint Powers Authority, a partnership of San Francisco, the East Bay’s AC Transit, Caltrain on the Peninsula and the California High-Speed Rail Authority. It is hard to know how many Caltrain riders would use the extension since the Transbay Joint Powers Authority has not released a post-COVID ridership model. A 2009 analysis from Cambridge Systematics estimated 31,500 weekday riders, but this is now implausible given that weekday ridership throughout the entire C...Police: Thieves steal $70,000 of Bay Area business’s wares in a week

Published Thu, 21 Nov 2024 22:08:56 GMT
When I joined the Coalition for the Homeless of Houston/Harris County almost 10 years ago as an eager 28-year-old, I had no idea what I was signing myself up for.Over the last decade, Houston has accomplished incredible things when it comes to addressing homelessness. Overall homelessness has decreased by more than 60%. We effectively ended veteran homelessness in 2015 (and to this day can get homeless vets back into housing within a few weeks), and an end to chronic homelessness is tantalizingly in sight. Our progress has been well documented, and communities from all over the world frequently reach out to us to ask how we did it and how they can do it, too. When the Los Angeles Times published an op-ed asking what Houston can teach L.A., journalist Marshall Ingwerson nailed it when he listed the three keys as scale of effort, excellent organization and pragmatism. Our community has historically benefitted from an abundant supply of affordable housing. As we have identified funding f...California Forever proposes land exchange near Travis Air Force Base
