Missouri House votes down bill to reinstate presidential primary

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:44:43 GMT

In a surprising move Monday, the Missouri House failed to pass a bill that would have reinstated the presidential primary for the 2024 election. The bill was initially approved on a voice vote last week, but failed when it came up for a roll call Monday to give it final approval  — a practice that’s usually considered a formality.“I believe we had (the results we were looking for) and I’m not certain yet what happened, why all these people suddenly reversed their votes,” said Rep. Rudy Veit, R-Wardsville, the bill’s sponsor. While the bill got 65 votes in support, 56 representatives from both parties voted in opposition, 31 Democrats voted “present” and 10 others did not vote.Rep. Peter Merideth, D-St. Louis, voted against the bill even though he said his caucus thinks it’s important to go back to a primary. Merideth said his party had a problem with amendments — specifically one that changed the date of the proposed primary from March to April. That amendment was added to the bi...

The beautiful array of nighttime colors called the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, was visible above Mammoth Lakes on Sunday, according to KTLA sister stations KSEE/KGPE.Pictures shared to YourCentralValley.com by photographer Carter Murphy show the ordinarily dark night sky lit up with purple and blue hues with streaks of light interspersed creating an utterly unique image. The dazzling display is thanks to a severe geomagnetic storm that erupted Friday. The effects of the storm were so strong Sunday night, that the aurora was possibly "visible as far south as Alabama and northern California," the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.Northern lights light up the night sky on Sunday above Mammoth Lakes (image courtesy of Carter Murphy)The storm was caused by coronal mass ejections, or CME. Covid-sniffing dogs can help detect infections in K-12 schools, new California study suggests

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:44:43 GMT

By Jacqueline Howard | CNNElementary students lined up behind a white curtain in the middle of a grand gymnasium at their school in northern California. They stood still as a dog handler walked a yellow Labrador along the other side of the curtain.Hidden from the children’s view, the 2-year-old female pup sniffed each child’s shoes from beneath that curtain barrier. After each sniff, the dog looked back up at the handler. Then the handler brought the dog to the next tiny pair of feet beneath the curtain, and the dog curiously brought her snout close to those toes, then a young girl’s lavender tennis shoes and then another child’s white high-tops.The dog was smelling for what are called volatile organic compounds that are known to be associated with Covid-19 infections. While watching the Covid-sniffing dog in action, Dr. Carol Glaser saw her vision come to life.Months prior, Glaser and her team were implementing the school’s Covid-19 testing program, usi...
