Miss Manners: Am I wrong to reply sarcastically to their terse texts?

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:38:14 GMT

DEAR MISS MANNERS: When texting or emailing friends or clients, I often start off with “Good morning” or “How are you?” and end with “Have a great day.”I always get short, right-to-the-point answers back, like “OK,” and they don’t usually start with “Good morning” or end with “Have a good day.” So sometimes, I sarcastically reply “Good morning to me, too,” which I know people don’t like.Related ArticlesAdvice | Miss Manners: The way this man sits bothers me no end Advice | Miss Manners: Is it just a verbal tic or is she insulting me? Workers are historically stressed out and disengaged

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:38:14 GMT

New York (CNN) — Bored at work? Annoyed with your boss? You’re not alone.A new Gallup poll released Tuesday revealed that workers around the world are historically stressed, disengaged with their work and increasingly fighting with their bosses. Gallup’s “State of the Global Workplace 2023” examined how “employees feel about their work and their lives, an important predictor of organizational resilience and performance.”Survey results revealed that 59% of workers are “quiet quitting,” i.e. are not engaged; and 18% are “loud quitting,” which is the act of being actively disengaged (but still employed). Gallup estimated that low engagement is costing the global economy nearly $9 trillion.Gallup asked employees what would make their jobs better, and the majority of responses — perhaps surprisingly — didn’t address pay and benefits, but rather issues such as more autonomy, clear goals and being recognized for their contributions.Stress at work is at a record-high level, according to Gal...

Get out ‘world’s smallest violin’ for Boris Johnson, says UK Labour

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:38:14 GMT

LONDON — The opposition Labour Party isn’t amused by a war of words between Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his predecessor-but-one Boris Johnson. The two Conservative politicians are locked in an escalating row over a bid by Johnson — who quit as an MP Friday with a blast at Sunak and a separate parliamentary probe into his conduct — to put his allies in the unelected House of Lords. Their feud centers on Johnson’s resignation honors list, which allows a departing prime minister to appoint people to the second chamber and gift them titles. The appointments, vetted by the House of Lords Appointments Commission (HOLAC), had to be cleared by the British prime minister.Sunak has claimed Johnson asked him to “do something that I wasn’t prepared to do” by defying the vetting committee — but the former PM has argued Sunak is “talking rubbish.” It’s the latest sign of bad blood between Johnson and Sunak, who was once Johnson’s top finance minis...

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman will meet French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Friday, an Elysée official said Wednesday, without providing details on the goal of the visit. In a statement released earlier Wednesday, the Saudi Royal Court said bin Salman was on his way to France for an “official visit.” MBS will meet with Macron, participate in the Summit for a New Global Financial Pact held in Paris next week, and attend a reception in the French capital next Monday supporting Saudi Arabia’s candidacy to host the Expo 2030 world’s fair.Relations between Paris and Riyadh are strong. The two leaders met for a working dinner in Paris last July, as France and Europe sought to find alternative energy suppliers amid Russia’s war on Ukraine. The meeting sparked criticism from rights groups, as it took place during bin Salman’s first trip to Europe since the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the kingdom’...
