Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:37:44 GMT

TORKIV, Ukraine — At the entrance to the village cemetery, where they buried Vasyl Pushkar, stands a tall, gray stone marker. The stone is engraved with an Orthodox cross and the words “Holodomor, 1932-33,” a memorial to the 4 million or more Ukrainian peasants who were starved to death by Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin when their farms were collectivized and their harvests seized.Ninety years later, Vladimir Putin is sending food prices for poor nations soaring by blocking Ukraine’s grain exports, which come from black earth villages such as Torkiv, a community of a thousand people about 200 miles south of Kyiv. Meantime, on Monday, village residents gathered to bury their latest casualty from Moscow’s current genocidal effort to erase Ukraine from the map.No wonder the pain and the defiance here run deep.Mobilized in March, the 42-year-old Pushkar died from wounds sustained in a mine explosion on the war’s front lines in the Donbas region of easte...

WILDWOOD, Mo. – Trash woes have now hit one of St. Louis's top suburbs. It's not an issue of too much garbage in Wildwood; it's too many garbage cans stacking up in people’s driveways, yards, or garages, along with skyrocketing garbage fees.New garbage service means new cans have been issued before the old ones have been taken away. There’s the sheer number of cans, plus the size of the new containers: a 96-gallon can for trash and a 64-gallon can for recycling.People are putting four, five, or even six barrels out in their driveways after the city arranged new trash service. The former provider, Waste Connections, pulled out with the expiration of its contract.“I think at one time there were probably at least over 100 trash cans in the subdivision waiting for the old provider to come pick them up,” resident Steve Ash said. “So, it’s been a dilemma.”The old bins have signs on them with messages like, “Take cans, please.” The old containers won’t work with the new provider’s trucks. ...

LoHi restaurant closes after almost three years on Tejon Street

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:37:44 GMT

The Fifth String is playing its final tune in Denver’s LoHi neighborhood on Aug. 12. But you haven’t seen the last of the restaurant yet, according to owner Amos Watts. The former chef at acclaimed Denver restaurants Corrida, Acorn and Old Major said the space, at 3316 Tejon St., is too big for his neighborhood eatery, which is known for its fusion fare and a never-ending wine list. “The kitchen is like the size of a hotel kitchen, so we’re looking for something a little more intimate where we can do more refined food,” he added. He originally had another location lined up to move into, but plans fell through. So now, he’s back to square one and on the hunt for a smaller space. “We absolutely plan to reopen, but the problem is we have 36 employees with nowhere to go right now, so we’re frantically looking,” Watts said.Related ArticlesRestaurants, Food and Drink | New vegan bakery opening next to Cap Hill’s City O’ City ...
